Joining a college and preparing for IIT is a good option provided you can do justice to both your curricular and JEE preparation. Usually people slack off after joining college. But if you are determined enough you can surely get what you want. Also try to maintain your grades in college because, by chance you are not selected or get desired rank you might be stuck in no-mans land.
