Waves that pass through the opening will actually fan out.This scenario is same as the case when light(a wave) is blocked by the barrier and is just allowed to pass through the slit.In that case diffraction occurs, the light bends around the slit because of the fact that there are no secondary waves to interfere with the waves produced from the slit.It can be better understood as the application of Huygen’s Principle.
