Software as a Service(SaaS)

Software as a Service (SaaS) - described as software applications deployed as a hosted service and accessed over the Internet via a standard web browser- is increasingly popular for its ability to simplify deployment and reduce customer acquisition costs.

SaaS (Software as a Service) is an application hosted on a remote server and accessed through the Internet.

A simple and concrete example of SaaS are the "free" email (also called web-based email) systems offered on the Internet such as Microsoft Hotmail, G-mail and Yahoo Mail. Each program meets the basic criteria of an SaaS application: a vendor (Microsoft, Google or Yahoo) hosts all of the programs, logic and data in a central location and provides end users access to this data and the software which is run and used over the world-wide web.

Two Main Categories of SaaS

SaaS is often divided into two major categories:
1. The so-called "line of business services" which refer to business solutions offered to companies and enterprises, and sold or made available to these enterprises on a subscription basis. Applications covered under this category include business processes such as supply-chain management programs, customer relations applications and others

2. Customer-oriented services which are offered to the general public either on a subscription basis or (more often than not) offered for free but are supported by advertising. Web-based email services such as those cited above fall into this general category.

What is SaaS?

Software as a service (or SaaS) is a way of delivering applications over the Internet—as a service. Instead of installing and maintaining software, you simply access it via the Internet, freeing yourself from complex software and hardware management.

SaaS applications are sometimes called Web-based software, on-demand software, or hosted software. Whatever the name, SaaS applications run on a SaaS provider’s servers. The provider manages access to the application, including security, availability, and performance.

SaaS Characteristics
A good way to understand the SaaS model is by thinking of a bank, which protects the privacy of each customer while providing service that is reliable and secure—on a massive scale. A bank’s customers all use the same financial systems and technology without worrying about anyone accessing their personal information without authorization.

A “bank” meets the key characteristics of the SaaS model:

Multitenant Architecture
A multitenant architecture, in which all users and applications share a single, common infrastructure and code base that is centrally maintained. Because SaaS vendor clients are all on the same infrastructure and code base, vendors can innovate more quickly and save the valuable development time previously spent on maintaining numerous versions of outdated code.

Easy Customization
The ability for each user to easily customize applications to fit their business processes without affecting the common infrastructure. Because of the way SaaS is architected, these customizations are unique to each company or user and are always preserved through upgrades. That means SaaS providers can make upgrades more often, with less customer risk and much lower adoption cost.

Better Access
Improved access to data from any networked device while making it easier to manage privileges, monitor data use, and ensure everyone sees the same information at the same time.

SaaS

Instead of owning software - and all the investment, maintenance, and depreciation it entails – you can simply rent use of that software from PHASE 2.

Save on:
- Hardware
- Software purchase and updates
- Support staff
- Power
- Security devices
- Remote access devices
- Administration

Set up is fast
Your choice of application(s) can be available to all your team members within hours, compared to months with a physical installation.

Use it from Anywhere
SaaS also offers increased mobility. Workers at multiple office locations, on the road, or at home can use the same essential documents, data, and tools. All you need is Internet access.

For companies of all sizes.
According to a 2006 survey by Forrester Research, SaaS is a good deal for companies with 100 - 499 employees. And "For companies with 50-100 users, SaaS is a slam dunk," says Ray Wang. View the entire report at: Forrester: The ROI Of SaaS.
