u have to check number of chiral centres in the compound
and then use the formula 2n for total optical isomers where n is the number of chiraal centres in the compund
in 2,3-dibromobutane it is exception as 22=4 but its answer will be there as there will be 1 isomer that will be meso and meso is not optically active sp we have to subtract it 
final optical isomers are 3
