Digestion is the breaking down of larger organic molecules obtained from the diet, such as carbohydrates, fats and proteins, into smaller ones, such as glucose, fatty acids, glycerol and amino acids.
The hollow organs that make up theGI tractare themouth,esophagus,stomach,small intestine, largeintestine—which includes therectum—andanus. Food enters themouthand passes to theanusthrough the hollow organs of theGI tract. Theliver,pancreas, andgallbladderare the solid organs of the digestive system.
