Detergents contain 20% active ingredients and remaining are sodium sulphate, inorganic phosphates, foaming agents. Phosphates from detergents assist algae and weeds to grow in water, which deplete d oxygen for sea animals. Hence, detergents cause water pollution.

Synthetic detergent are non-biodegradable product that remain in aquatic bodies for a long period of time. This makes the water undrinkable to aquatic organisms. Also, presence of synthetic detergent in water bodies accelerates the growth of algae that eventually results in the reduction of oxygen level. Lower oxygen level finally leads to the death of the auatic organisms.
