Refractive Index is extent of ability of a medium to bend the light when the  light enters in the medium or goes out of the medium.
This is the basic definition of Refractive Index..

A refractive index is expressed as the term to which the bending of light takes place.It is also defined as the  ratio  to the speed of  light  in  vacuum  to  the speed of  light  in  that medium.  It has no unit.  It is representated by the Greek alphabet (mu)
