New Delhi: The present generation is a die-hard fan of Facebook. Hence, when the social networking firm visited the campuses of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) last year and handed out lucrative offers to some of the students, many faces lighted up. Many IITians made it their goal to join the dream team of Facebook. But the social networking site has not registered for campus placements at any of the IITs this year leaving several graduating IITians heartbroken and disappointed.
The good news is that Facebook did give a pre-placement offer (PPO) to an IIT-B student. Overall, the buzz is that Facebook had already fulfilled its requirements last year and its decision to not hire is not restricted to Indian institutes.
In the wake of current global economy slump, many big names have not registered for IIT placement season yet. However, IITs claim that the total number of companies registering for the event is not likely to show a dip this year.
At IIT-Bombay, 210 companies have already registered. It is expected that 100 more companies will visit the campus till the end of placement season and the academic year in June. Last year, a total of 280 companies had visited IIT-B. The batch strength of IIT Bombay has gone up by 200 students this year.
IIT-Madras, students have already received as many as 54 PPOs from various companies, as against 33 PPOs offered last year.
The situation seems a bit difficult at IIT Delhi, which will not see least 10 of its major regular recruiters this year. 170 companies have registered for campus placements here and it is expected that at least 80 more companies will register by the month-end.
Negotiations are still on at IIT Kanpur, where 135 companies have already registered for campus placements. The campus hopes to rope in more companies with whom it has shared good relations in the past. International companies from Singapore and Japan have also shown interest in IIT Kanpur. However, due to the global slowdown, some companies are delaying their decision to hire.
